Paranormal State Comes to DVD

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

21D7ZAO YEL._AA_SL160_ Paranormal State - Season 1 is coming out on DVD but when is as big as mystery as Ryan investigates on the show.  According to Amazon, you won’t see this set until the end of April.  But A&E, who makes the video, has it listed for a March 25th release.

Either way, it’s the full first season of the series but there don’t appear to be any extras on the set which is odd.

Still, for those of you, like me, who may have missed an episode here and there, it’s the best way to catch up and see them all again and in order!

Who You Gonna Call? Ghost Hunters!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Ghost_Hunters_Grant_Jason They were asked the question, what is scarier: plumber work or ghost hunting work?

Jason Hawes: Well the problem is, half the plumbing jobs can actually be listed under paranormal. So yeah, plumbing is more frightening. You never know, what if you make a mistake and somebody’s house blows up? Yeah, so…

Grant Wilson: . . . there are a lot of similarities. I mean, in both situations you got people who…

Jason Hawes: . . . call you in because they need your help.

Grant Wilson: . . . they don’t understand the situation. And then you go in with the knowledge, you help them out and you leave them feeling better. And, you know, you never know what house you’re walking into. Some people are crazy.

And on they go, finishing each other’s sentences time and time again.  I guess it’s what comes from spending hours and hours skulking around in dark rooms and ancient tunnels in search of that one definitive paranormal experience.  They’re the leaders of TAPS — The Atlantic Paranormal Society, and they’re also the stars of one of SCI FI Channels highest rated TV shows, "Ghost Hunters."

Grant and Jason and the whole gang are about to embark on Season Four so they sat down with reporters to inform, enlighten and tease a little about what’s coming up.

Ghost Hunters Talk About Being Scared

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Ghost_Hunters_Grant This week SFI Channel’s "Ghost Hunters" Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes sat down to talk with reporters.  Here’s what Grant had to say about "getting scared on the job."

"Some of these places you’re in you get an uneasy feeling like you got to look over your shoulder. You’ll be startled by things. But, you know what? You were called in by people to investigate this. They called you in as professionals, looking for your help and guidance. If you run out of their house or, you know, you just tell them I can’t do this, I got to leave, then those people are stranded.

And not just stranded, but now they’re even more fearful when the professional that they called in is terrified to be in their house."

Making a Buck and Taking Advantage of Belief

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

satellite.jpgA desire to explore the world of the paranormal, seeking that which is unexplained or unproved, is exciting and often fulfilling. But unfortunately, our society has an M.O. of taking advantage of belief and desire. It can make the faithful into fools. And usually that can be accomplished with simply separating the believers from their hard-earned money.

Paranormal technology has the potential to enhance seekers’ paranormal quests. Or it can be useless scams. The latest in this arena? Various expensive tools designed to capitalize on grieving believers’ desires to contact departed loved ones.

Some examples. The Phone Angel, a cell phone buried in a grave with an external speaker, has been sold for nearly ,000 a piece. Mourners can call and broadcast their voices towards their deceased family member or friend. Or how about the Endless Echoes satellite dish tool, developed on the idea that dead souls float in outer space. For the price of .95 a minute, you can leave a message on the company’s answering service — ideally that message you never got to communicate — and have it blasted into space. Paranormal State: Vegas

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

vegas.jpgIn this episode, the crew goes to Vegas to visit Savannah, a teenager who appears to be seeing dead people.  Once again, I was really intrigued by the fact that Ryan didn’t immediately accept her story and that he was concerned for her emotional and mental well being.  Savannah was the victim of assault a few years earlier and Ryan was concerned that she was using the ghost sightings as a way to deal with her trauma.

If you visit The Paranormal Insider blog, you’ll see that Savannah’s mother has several strange stories to tell but it doesn’t end there.  During Ryan’s visit, Savannah drew a picture of one particularly visible spirit.  A teen girl named Emily, who had also been assaulted but wasn’t lucky enough to survive.  She drew a picture of Emily and then related details to the team that were very specific.  Specific enough for the team to get a bead on exactly who the spirit belonged to.

Here’s where it gets wonky.  In the episode, Ryan states that Savannah had details, such as the young victim’s pregnancy, that had never been reported on the Internet.  Thus, she couldn’t know unless she had spoken to the dead girl.  However, I did some investigating on my own and I found “Emily”, too.  And those details ARE listed on the web.  Now, I understand that these episodes of Paranormal State were filmed some time ago, so perhaps the websites weren’t active then.

Still.  Take a look at the photo and the details for Emily Garcia at this website and see if you don’t notice a real resemblance to Savannah’s drawing at the top of this page.

Paranormal State: Devil in Syracuse

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

devilinsyracuse.jpgFinally catching up on the last two episodes of Paranormal State before the new ones begin on Dec. 31.  I’m not sure if I like this show or not, to be honest.  I keep coming back, so I guess that says something but I feel like it’s a bit overly dramatic for the camera and that puts me off.

In this episode, Ryan and the group visit a home that is reported to be the latest playground of the demon that announced itself an episode earlier.  The little girl in the house claimed she often got woke up by a growling monster and the husband claimed he had claw marks on his back after confronting the ‘thing’ in the house.

What I found really fascinating about the episode was the fact that the family was clearly in an emotional upheaval and you have to wonder if one thing has anything to do with the other.  The house was a mess, the husband and wife having marital problems, signs of neglect all around.  Ryan talks of demons finding the weak, and it makes me wonder if people who are in this kind of state don’t actually seek out a paranormal explanation rather than face the reality.

And then there was Pat.  Pat was a family friend who was obviously making matters worse.  On the Paranormal Insider blog, Ryan tells of an incident that I wish they had left on camera but it would have shattered the illusion for sure.  During one of the most emotional moments in the episode there was a banging on the front door.  Pat yelled at Ryan not to open the door because it was the demon trying to get in.  Everyone was terrified and it turned out to be a production assistant delivering an item to the camera man.

Now THAT would have made for an interesting moment in my eyes.  Present the facts to me and I’ll keep watching.  If I feel like you’re twisting the facts to suit the show, I’ll turn the channel and I won’t come back.

Ghost Hunters: The Myrtles Plantation

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

myrtles.jpgWith hardly anything new on TV tonight, I flipped on an old episode of Ghost Hunters on SCI FI mostly because it had to do with The Myrtles Plantation. A couple of years ago, I read the book written by the Myrtles owner and it was a fascinating tale. The Myrtles is called one of the most haunted places in America and it sure seems to be true.

The stories of the Myrtles involve a slave girl named Chloe who can be seen in THIS famous photo. People also report seeing and hearing two little girls and a Confederate soldier who likes to stroll along the front lawn. Also take a look at THIS creepy Myrtles pic.

The TAPS crew ended up with some interesting findings - especially a transparent image that runs across the thermal camera and a moving lamp! Yep, a lamp moves across a table right before your very eyes! The creepiest thing though was a hunched shadow that pops up in the front door windows as if someone were peaking in then ducking down to hide. That was truly creepy.

The Myrtles is a bed and breakfast near New Orleans so you can book a room and do a little ghost hunting yourself if you’ve a mind to. And if you haven’t read The Myrtles Plantation: The True Story of America’s Most Haunted House, you must check it out, it’s a disturbing story of how a haunted house can literally drive you crazy.

Here are a couple of other Myrtles websites.

I Hear Dead People

Monday, December 10th, 2007

paranormalstate.jpgIf you’re walking down a dark, lonely street in New York City and you hear a voice inside your head — fear not. You haven’t lost your mind, you’ve simply come across an innovative new advertisement for A&E’s Paranormal State.

The technology behind it is called HoloSonic and it actually projects a sound wave into your brain so you literally are hearing voices in your head. Creepy, huh? Ironically, the technology was made for less creepy uses such as providing tours in quiet places such as museums or reducing noise pollution in the city. But people who experienced the voices late at night weren’t thinking ads when the female voice said, “It’s not your imagination. . . ”
